Cannabis Canada Supports Additional Product Testing Requirements for Medical Cannabis

    Press releases

May 9, 2017 – Ottawa, Ontario – Cannabis Canada Association and its members welcome the May 5, 2017 announcement by Health Canada of new mandatory testing of medical cannabis for unauthorized pesticides, which reflects the Association’s own direction, announced March 9, 2017, requiring new product testing protocols for all Association members.

“It is essential that Canadians have full confidence in the quality of their medical cannabis,” said Colette Rivet, Executive Director of Cannabis Canada. “Canada has established the most rigorously regulated medical cannabis system in the world. With Health Canada governance and industry commitments, we will continue to add precision to regulatory requirements, further strengthening patient and consumer protection.”

Cannabis Canada and its members work in collaboration with Health Canada and other experts to protect the health of Canadians and ensure a safe and well-regulated cannabis system in Canada. In keeping with this commitment, on March 9, 2017, Cannabis Canada announced the development of a new set of guidelines that would see Licensed Producer members of the Association provide, as a requirement of membership in 2017-2018, confirmation that their product testing protocols include bacteria, microbial, aflatoxins, heavy metals and pesticides. At the May 1, 2017 meeting of the Board of Directors, the testing requirements were specified to include both myclobutanil and bifenazate.
